A fresh legal confrontation has erupted in India’s media and entertainment industry, with JioStar reportedly initiating proceedings against Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited over the alleged unauthorised telecast of several Bollywood films.

According to a Reuters report, JioStar, the media venture backed by Reliance Industries and Walt Disney, has alleged that Zee broadcast 12 films nearly 20 times despite the broadcast rights being held by JioStar at the time. The titles reportedly include well-known Bollywood films such as Deewaar, Tridev and Dangal.

The matter has reportedly been filed before the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee, with Zee directed to appear for mediation proceedings on May 25. If mediation does not lead to a resolution, the dispute could move into a more formal legal battle between the two major broadcasters.

What is the dispute about?

JioStar has reportedly claimed that Zee broadcast several films without having the required rights to air them. In the media and entertainment industry, film broadcasting rights are highly valuable. A company that owns these rights has the legal authority to show the films on its channels or platforms during a specific period.

JioStar has alleged that Zee’s telecast of the films violated its rights. The company may reportedly seek damages of more than ₹250 million, which is around ₹25 crore.

Zee, on the other hand, has denied any deliberate wrongdoing. The company has reportedly said that the broadcasts were “inadvertent and unintentional”.

The matter will now move to mediation. Zee has reportedly been directed to appear before the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee on May 25.

If both companies reach a settlement during mediation, the dispute may be resolved without a long court battle. However, if mediation fails, the matter could move into further legal proceedings.
